For the first time in over two decades, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated the nutrition facts label for all packaged food products. Today’s new food label has to sport a streamlined design and feature new and updated nutrition information.

The new food label guidelines by the FDA are already being implemented by many food companies since the beginning of this year, but there are many who are yet to adopt and implement it. One thing for sure is that everyone has to implement and comply with this new food label regulation by July 2021.

The new food label will display Serving Size in bold, larger fonts at the top of the label, where some amounts have been updated to reflect the more realistic serving size, then the calorie information (amount per serving) has to display in a significantly larger font, the DV% (daily value) should reflect new recommendations and display in bold font, then comes the added sugar information, and to the bottom of the new food label, the information of micronutrients like that of potassium and vitamin D added, vitamin A and C, etc. need to be displayed. 

That said, several modifications have been made to the new nutrition label. These include changes to the serving size, calories, fat, Daily Values, and footnote. Vitamins A and C were removed, and the amount of micronutrients is listed in milligrams (mg). The objective of the new food label is to help provide consumers the information they need to make healthy dietary decisions.
