The U.S. FDA Guidelines for New Nutrition Facts Label

On January 1, 2020, the U.S. FDA has published new guidelines for food manufacturers. As a result, they have to comply with those guidelines to create a new nutrition facts panel.

Serving size
The new nutrition facts panel has to highlight calories and servings and show up in a larger font size and a bolder type. The U.S. FDA new rules mandate making the serving size figures reflect how Americans really eat and that food manufacturers have to follow them now onward. 




Potassium and Vitamin D
The new guidelines for labeling from the U.S. FDA want food manufacturers to exclude information for vitamins A and C and replace them with the information of potassium and vitamin D, because deficiencies of the vitamins A and C are rare today. Calcium and iron will continue to show up in the new nutrition facts panel.

Added Sugar
In a major change brought to food labeling and displaying information, the U.S. FDA makes it mandatory for food manufacturers to specify the amount of added sugar during food processing. Sugar information is a big requirement now and that’s why food manufacturers are instructed to display exact and transparent data about sugar, including fruits and vegetables, grains, and dairy products.

Calories
New nutrition facts panel has to show information about “Calories from Fat.” The reason is, this type of fat is more important than the amount. “Total Fat,” “Saturated Fat,” and “Trans Fat” will continue to show up in the new nutrition facts panel.

The U.S. FDA has also brought in a few minor changes to the supplement facts labels. Supplement info is found on dietary supplement products and in order to ensure its consistency, this new nutrition facts panel rule has been brought in.
